Stephen Colbert received a standing ovation from the crowd at Sundayâs 2025 Emmy Awards ceremony as his âLate Showââwhose surprise cancellation was announced by CBS earlier this yearâwon the âoutstanding talk seriesâ prize, in a ceremony that saw very minimal political commentary and references.
Key Facts
Colbert received his first standing ovation as he appeared on stage to present the award for the âBest Lead Actor in a Comedy Seriesâ and poked fun at his showâs cancellation, saying: âWhile I have your attention, is anyone hiring?â
The late-night host then shared his old headshot with actor Harrison Ford, and asked him, âCan you pass this on to Spielberg?â
Colbert and the entire team of the âLate Show with Stephen Colbertâ received a standing ovation from the audience again after the show won its first âOutstanding Talk Seriesâ Emmyâalso the first time a network show has won the category, first established in 2015.
In his acceptance speech, the comedian thanked CBS for âgiving us the privilege to be part of the late-night tradition, which I hope continues long after weâre no longer doing this showâ and the â200 incredible professionalsâ who work on the show.
Colbert said in 2015 he set out to do a late-night comedy show about âlove,â but at a âcertain point, and you can guess when that point was, I realized that we were doing a late-night comedy show about loss.â
The late night host closed his speech saying that ten years later, âI have never loved my country more desperately,â adding: âGod bless America. Stay strong, be brave.â
Were There Any Major Political Comments Made At The Emmys?
The show was light on politics, although not completely devoid of it. Hannah Einbinder, who won an Emmy for the âBest Supporting Actress in a Comedy Seriesâ for her work on the show âHacks,â closed out her acceptance speech by saying: âFuck ICE and free Palestine!â While presenting the talk show prize, Bryan Cranston joked about âdestructive woke degenerates like Tom Hanks,â appearing to mock President Donald Trumpâs recent attack on the Oscar-winning actor. A few other political displays and messages were shared during the red carpet ceremony. Einbinderâs âHacksâ co-star, Megan Stalter, appeared on the red carpet with a handbag that had a sticker that read âCease Fire!â and was wearing an âArtists4Ceasefireâ pin, calling for an end to the war in Gaza. Actor Javier Bardem also wore the âArtists4Ceasefireâ pin and told USA Today: âHow many hundreds of thousands of dead children need to suffer for people to wake up?â Both the ceremony and red carpet, however, avoided any references to Charlie Kirkâs assassination.
Who Were The Big 2025 Emmy Winners?
Netflix drama âAdolescenceâ and Apple TV comedy âThe Studioâ emerged as the the big winners of the night, picking up six and four awards respectively. The Seth Rogen-led âThe Studioâ won the best comedy series, best actor, best directing and best writing prizes. âThe Pittâ won the best drama series award and its lead Noah Wyle won best actor in the drama category. Adolescence won the best limited series award, while the showâs 15-year-old British star, Owen Cooper, became the youngest-ever male winner in any Emmy acting category, as he won the best supporting actor prize in a limited series prize.
